UK bingo sites hit by a fire in Gibralter
How can a fire in a far away place like Gibralter halt the fun and games on thousands of UK online bingo players on a sunny Sunday afternoon? That is the question many players were asking as that is just what happened over the Easter weekend.\r\n\r\nSites such as William Hill, Ladbrokes, Betfred and tombola all ground to a halt for a few hours on Sunday afternoon as an explosion at a power station in Gibralter in the area where many online bingo and gaming sites have their offices meant that power was lost. This is the area where these bingo operators have their servers and customer service offices and as they had no power they were put out of action.\r\n\r\nMany gambling sites are operated overseas under special licences and because of beneficial tax rules – all of which may change come December with the introduction of the UK Point of Consumption tax. This will mean that operators are taxed on where their income comes from and not where they operate from as is currently the case.\r\n\r\nThe fire and explosion were significant events, but fortunately there are no reported casualties and the bingo sites and sports book sites were back up and running within a few hours as events in Gibralter were brought under control.
